Select the right walkway
When it comes to upgrading the look and feel of our commercial premises, only the best will do, and whilst many renovations mean disrupting your wider workplace, the installation of a covered walkway unlocks a number of benefits.
As well as being an experienced street furniture supplier, Miko Shelter Solutions also delivers a selection of standard and bespoke covered walkway products. We have worked with organisations (both private and public sector) to transform the appearance and functionality of a commercial space without causing disruption to employees, visitors and the general working day. Here we provide the ultimate guide to choosing the right covered walkway for your premises so you can unlock the advantages that many of our clients already harness!
Why choose a covered walkway?
Whilst the minimal disruption associated with the installation of a covered walkway has already been mentioned, it’s not the only advantage that comes with the design, manufacture and fitting of standard or bespoke structures.
Covered walkways enhance the appearance of your premises quickly and affordably, and can in fact provide an instant makeover to the most rundown and underappreciated properties. In addition to making the right first, second and third impression on employees and visiting customers or clients (an impression that could count towards your profits), covered walkways are also particularly functional.
These walkways provide all year round protection, which is perfect for dealing with everything that the great British weather throws at us. Come winter, covered walkways can shield you from rain and snow, whilst long summer days are also no problem thanks to their UVA and UVB ray protection.
How can I select the right walkway for me?
At Miko, we provide a range of covered walkways to suit every application, and through this we have been able to help everyone from private commercial and industrial businesses to hospitals, council offices and schools.
All our covered walkway products unlock the benefits mentioned above and more, and clients can choose from a selection of standard products or go bespoke. We work with you from concept to completion, whether you opt for a standard or bespoke walkway, and with no need for third party services, we can deliver high quality solutions that won’t break the bank.
Our team is here to help you choose the right product so you can complement your premises and your purse strings. Call 0191 428 0452 to discuss your requirements.
Shelters, Compounds, Lockers and Racks
With a drive towards a better and healthier way of living, cycling has become a vital part of life for many individuals looking to get to work or school safely, affordably and proactively. However, upon arrival at the destination, many cyclists want to know that their pride and joy is looked after whilst they are completing a shift at work or a day in the classroom.
As leading street furniture suppliers, the Miko Shelter Solutions team deliver a number of options for those looking to make their premises as bike friendly as possible. Here we reveal the cycle solutions available so you can find one that suits the needs of your pupils and workforce as well as your budget.
Cycle shelters
The cycle shelter is an easy and affordable addition to any playground or commercial premises. At Miko Shelter Solutions, we design, build and install a number of cycle shelter products, with our Alnwick shelter proving the most popular. Available with a 10, 20 or 30 cycle capacity, the Alnwick shelter can be fitted to the gates of your premises to provide secure storage.
Its powder coated or galvanised finish also means that your new cycle shelter addition will stand the test of time and be a worthwhile investment for your wider organisation. Looking for another design? We also offer Berwick, Corbridge, Durham, Elswick, Felton and Rainbow cycle shelters, meaning you are certain to find the right design and structure that is right for you and your budget!
Cycle compounds
Our cycle compounds are another product that provides secure and lockable storage. Like our cycle shelters, the cycle compound provides all round visibility, which actively works as a deterrent. In addition to fitting your compound out with cycle racks and gates, we also deliver a range of optional extras to ramp up security further, such as lighting and CCTV.
Cycle lockers
The vertical and horizontal cycle lockers found here at Miko can add a colourful addition to any playground or business premises. The lockers are multipurpose, meaning as well as storing bicycles owned by your pupils, workforce and visitors, they also double as storage for motorcycles, toys and sports equipment.
Cycle racks
Offering a more simplified design than our cycle compounds, lockers and shelters, our bike racks can be customised to accommodate a range of capacities and be finished to complement your wider surroundings or school/business colours.

Whilst we have an abundance of rain, wind and snow here in the UK, when the sun does come out the majority of us are out there enjoying it. With spring and summer now in plain sight however, talk turns to the disadvantages associated with those long, sunny days.
UVA and UVB rays are two disadvantages that always go hand in hand with a summer’s day and preventing their dangerous effects is important. As a primary or secondary school, you have a responsibility to educate and protect your pupils from UVA and UVB, so where do you start?
About UVA and UVB rays
UVA and UVB rays are often referred to in the same breath, in fact ultraviolet A are long wave rays, whilst ultraviolet B are short wave rays. Each presents dangers to individuals of all ages without the right protection.
Ultraviolet radiation is a part of the light spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. Depending on the wavelengths in which these rays hit the earth they are classed as UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC rays pose no threat as these are instantly absorbed into the o-zone layer so never reach the earth.
Why are UVA and UVB rays so dangerous?
Whilst both types of ultraviolet radiation are dangerous, due to their longer wavelength, UVA rays can penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB. With continuous exposure and no protection, both rays have the availability to transform normal skin cells into tumour cells.
What can I do to limit exposure?
There are a number of steps that can be taken to protect both yourself and your pupils from exposure to dangerous UVA and UVB rays. Education is the key when encouraging pupils and parents to wage their own fight against these rays so share teachings on sunscreen protection.
For effective UVA and UVB protection, it is recommended that you use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. There are also sunscreen products that provide a combination of UVA-protective ingredients to deliver dual protection.
What other steps can be taken in the school environment?
Providing shaded areas on the playground will also help to promote a positive and protective environment. In addition to grabbing shade under trees and playground furniture, sun canopies offer specialist protection as well as purpose.
As the UK’s leading manufacturer of playground shelters, canopies and walkways, the Miko Engineering team have a number of freestanding sun canopies and sail canopies available for installation. These canopies provide optimum protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
We understand that your commercial premises forms a vital part of your business identity, however, with many of today’s commercial and industrial buildings rather lacklustre, it’s not always easy to put your best face forward.

As one of the UK’s most experienced and established street furniture manufacturers, we have helped companies from all sectors transform the face of their commercial premises for the better. Here we offer our top tips for making the most of your commercial property…

First impressions do after all count, and in many cases you will only have one chance to wow. Your brand will have been designed to satisfy your customers and complement your products or services, so use this in your building too, both inside and out. In today’s world, businesses are regularly targeted by criminals so put security at the top of agenda. CCTV, outdoor lighting, anti-climb fencing and key card access are just some of the features that can be incorporated to keep your property secure, your employees safe and your assets protected.
Complete all-year round maintenance
There is simply no point spending thousands on renovations if no time is spent maintaining them. Renovations to both the inside and outside of your building are an investment that needs to be nurtured so introduce a year-round maintenance regime to keep your appearance up to scratch.
Add a few extras
You don’t have to complete extensive works to enhance your building’s appearance, often it’s the little things that make a big difference. Our canopies and walkways are one affordable option that can transform the appearance of a commercial property. Whether you opt for fixed or freestanding, our canopies can be incorporated in a number of locations and environments offering an instant facelift without any disruption.

Do you want a bike friendly workplace?
In recent years, cycling has taken Britain by storm but unbeknown to many, encouraging employees to ride rather than drive to work could unlock a number of advantages for employers too. Staff members who regularly cycle to work tend to be more productive and punctual, whilst improved health benefits also mean less sick days are taken. In addition to this, cycling reduces the amount of space you need for car parking and dramatically cuts the carbon footprint of your workplace.
Becoming a bike friendly workplace is a sure-fire way of getting more employees on their bikes, but how can you achieve this and unlock these excellent business bonuses?
Improve Your End-of-Trip Facilities
For cyclists everywhere having somewhere to store their bike securely at work is of utmost importance, and improving your end-of-trip facilities will ensure you can cater to the needs of cyclists within your workplace.
Bike shelters can be easily and cost effectively integrated into any workplace, providing a high quality facility to store bicycles safely and securely. We offer a range of bicycle shelters, all of which can be customised to your needs and to complement your surroundings. All of our bike sheds are built to last and designed to protect bicycles from theft and the great British weather.
Relax Your Dress Code
Many individuals are put off cycling to work due to the upheaval of changing out of their cycling gear when arriving at the office. Relaxing the strict dress code of your workplace may provide the answer. Alternatively, providing suitable shower and changing facilities for cyclists to use to slip into their office attire can ensure you further enhance your end-of-trip facilities.
Incentivise
Offering incentives for those who ride to work is also a great way to encourage cycling within the workplace. Many companies offer mileage for those commuting by bike, providing monetary incentives for those who opt for this healthier way to travel. In addition this, if many of your employees have to attend meetings outside of the office during the working day, providing access to a company car to complete journeys that are too far to cycle is an excellent incentive to encourage employees to leave their own vehicles at home.
Celebrate Cycling
Providing facilities in house that encourage and even celebrate cycling will ensure your bike friendly ethos spreads company wide. Run regular events for cyclists and participate as a company in national events like Bike to Work Week.
Larger companies with a larger budget may also wish to offer a bike hire service for those who want to ride but can’t afford to purchase expensive cycling equipment. Setting up networks and support groups for those who commute by bike can also encourage cycling whilst providing individual cyclists with the contacts they need to commute safely and confidently in pairs or groups.
With spring well underway and summer swiftly approaching, the great British weather is taking a sunnier turn creating the perfect environment to take learning outside of the confines of the classroom.
Here at Miko Shelter Solutions, we specialise in the design and manufacture of outdoor classrooms and encourage schools and other educational organisations to take advantage of the benefits of outdoor learning. But why is an outdoor classroom the right choice for your school premises?
We have compiled our top five benefits of outdoor classrooms to ensure schools can unlock a more engaging way to learn for pupils of all ages and abilities.
1. Look beyond the boundaries of traditional teaching
Whilst the weather may inhibit outdoor learning in the autumn and winter months, the warmer seasons provide the perfect opportunity to explore teaching methods beyond the traditional textbooks, lectures and video resources. Investing in an outdoor classroom enables teachers to utilise all that nature has to offer transforming the way that they teach for the better.
Outdoor learning offers an interactive experience for students of various ages and the outdoor classroom provides a great environment and atmosphere as well as the space and ability to take a more practical, experiential approach to teaching.
2. Celebrate different learning styles
Learning styles vary from student to student, and often the traditional indoor classroom environment can restrict students that learn better through practical teaching models. The outdoor classroom ensures teachers can celebrate these different learning styles and cater to every student accordingly.
3. Take a multi-sensory approach
Multi-sensory experiences are particularly rewarding, and the outdoors gives every student the chance to undertake activities that exercise every sense from smell, hearing and touch to taste and sight.
4. Connect with the environment around you
As well as using an outdoor classroom to connect with nature, taking learning out into the community can be extremely beneficial and give students, teachers and the wider school roots in the world around them. Usually community activities are restricted to out-of-school hours, however, the use of an outdoor classroom enables schools to use stewardship and other learning techniques to connect with the community and enhance learning.
This positive connection between school and community will not only encourage social involvement, but also enforce a positive message about the school and public education.
5. An affordable way to expand your premises and learning
Whilst the introduction of an outdoor classroom has a selection of learning benefits, it can also help to increase the seasonal capacity of the school premises. The design and manufacture of outdoor classrooms is relatively inexpensive and is an efficient way to enhance the size, facilities and engagement of your school premises.
For organisations of all shapes, sizes and niches the addition of a waiting shelter can be a viable and affordable option for enhancing the appearance of your premises as well as the facilities on offer to staff, customers and clients.
With over 25 years of experience in the design and manufacture of street furniture and shelters, Miko Engineering has helped thousands of businesses transform their premises. If you are considering waiting shelter installation, read our guide first to ensure you have all the information you need to find the ideal shelter solution for you…
