Covered walkways are beneficial to any business or indoor building as they protect your visitors come rain or shine! Just like an entrance canopy, the sole puprose of a covered walkway to is provide shelter that can keep you dry from heavy showers and cool in the shade from the summer sunshine. This blog post will take a closer look at what covered walkways are, and some examples of what is available to you here at Miko and how we can help improve your outdoor spaces.
What Is A Covered Walkway?
A Covered Walkway is a structure that is designed to provide protection from the elements when walking from one location to another. Typically, covered walkway systems will be installed outside of existing buildings in a sheltered space and used to connect different areas of a facility. They can make a great difference to a business, school or retail centre, increasing the overall height, dimension and shape of the exterior, and can be used during the process of a renovation. The easy-to-integrate, fixed and free-standing products provided by our team here at Miko Shelter Solutions offer a range of different finishes and engineering extras to ensure that the quality of your covered walkway is second-to-none.
Examples of Covered Walkways:
- Monopitched covered walkway – a simple design that complements even the more traditional buildings
- Timber covered walkway – made with structural timber, combining steel components where necessary
- Curved covered walkway – allows for larger span to the extra strength of the radiused sections
- Wave covered walkway – a quirky design that can be adapted to complement the existing building
What Covered Walkways Can MIKO Provide Me With?
Here at MIKO we specialise in a range of both standard and bespoke covered walkways for a range of sectors that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, boosting your overall curb appeal. We can supply you with a range of alternative solutions including:
Does a Covered Walkway need planning permission?
Whether or not your covered walkway requires planning permission is dependent on a few factors. Firstly, if the land that the covered walkway is on is part of a leasehold agreement, you will require written permission from the landowner to install any additional structures. With that said, even with permission from the landowner, you will also need to inform your local authority of the changes. How simple this process is will depend on the extent of the project.
Before installing a covered walkway, it is important to be informed of any local planning permission requirements. We are happy to support our clients with navigating this process to ensure that the covered walkways we provide meet all necessary regulations.
Curved Covered Walkways –
The curved covered walkway is our most popular covered walkway here at Miko. With a simplistic and robust design that presents a combination of quality and durability at an affordable cost.t.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are covered walkways suitable for traditional building designs?
Yes, covered walkways are versatile and can seamlessly complement even traditional building designs. Monopitched covered walkways, for example, offer an elegant and straightforward design that harmonizes with classic architecture. At Miko Engineering, we offer a range of covered walkway options, including designs that can enhance the aesthetics of traditional buildings.
Can I customise a covered walkway to match my building’s architecture?
Absolutely! Our Wave Covered Walkway, for instance, is a quirky design that can be customised to complement your existing building. You have the freedom to add personal touches, making it uniquely yours. We also offer other customisation options to ensure that the covered walkway aligns with your specific architectural style.
Do covered walkways require planning permission?
Whether you need planning permission for a covered walkway depends on factors such as land ownership and local regulations. If the land is part of a leasehold agreement, you’ll require written permission from the landowner. Even with permission, you’ll need to inform your local authority. The complexity of this process depends on the project’s extent. We can guide you through the planning permission requirements to ensure compliance.
What materials are used in covered walkway construction, and are they durable?
Covered walkways are typically made from materials like mild steel, structural timber, and various roof cladding options. These materials are chosen for their durability and strength. For example, our Timber Covered Walkway incorporates steel components where necessary to ensure longevity. We also provide options for roof cladding, such as multi-wall polycarbonate and toughened laminated glass, to meet your specific needs and ensure the durability of your covered walkway.
Curved covered walkways are manufactured from mild steel in a range of circular hollow sections and rectangular hollow sections, meaning that each walkway can be customised to your personal specifications. The roof of your covered walkway roof can be clad using a range of materials. For example, multi-wall polycarbonate will give it an opaque finish, allowing natural sunlight to shine through whilst also stopping any direct UV light. Alternatively, you could choose another form of roof cladding such as toughened laminated glass. Each covered walkway is then fitted with an aluminium or PVC gutter.
What Do The Measurements Need To Be?
All of our curved covered walkways can be specifically designed and manufactured to fit all projects, both big and small. So if you feel like your business or local school has a particularly small entranceway, then fear not – we can help improve your outdoor area!
Wave Covered Walkways –
The wave covered walkway is another popular style of canopy that we can supply you with here at Miko. It boasts similarities to our curved covered walkway but with a more elaborate twist for a unique stamp.

How Are They Made And What Do The Measurements Need To Be?
The materials used, size specifications and finish are the same as the previously mentioned curved covered walkway, so you can guarantee that they will be manufactured to a high standard. There is always the option to add some personal touches to your wave covered walkway at any stage to put your own stamp on your canopy, ensuring that you are 100% happy with the overall finished product.

So today is #WorldBicycleDay – And it is staggering how little of our population in the UK actively cycle on a daily basis, whether that be for downtime, or your commute to work or to take your children to school. But we think this could change if people really knew the benefits that cycling can have on both your physical AND mental health! It’s time to ditch the car keys and pick up your helmet with Miko’s array of cycling storage and shelter solutions.

Let’s Look At The Stats
In official reports carried out in 2017 in the UK, these were the findings:
- A huge 71% of the population surveyed admitted they never cycle at all these days.
- Only 42% of people (aged 5+) own or have access to a bike.
- 4% of commute trips are made via cycling.
- Between April 2017 and March 2018, there were an estimated 288,000 incidents of bicycle theft.
Cycling Benefits On Your Physical Health
With it being said that it only takes around two to four hours of exercise a week to improve your general health, there really is no excuse to not get on your bike and enjoy a bike ride from time to time. Whether you ride to the local shops to pick up this evening’s dinner, or you switch up your morning commute to work, it can have substantial benefits on your general, physical health. These can include; increased cardiovascular fitness, improve your joint mobility, improve your posture, 45% lower risk of developing cancer.
You will find that gentle exercise in the form of cycling is great for lowering health risks and improving your general physical fitness as firstly it is one of the easiest sports, once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget. It is low impact exercise which ultimately results in less strain on the body, it provides a good muscle workout leaning your legs, bum and stomach and working all muscle groups as you pedal. And it is good for building stamina and strength over time.
Cycling Benefits On Your Mental Health
Looking after your personal mental health can be as easy as you prefer. You can do the simplest of tasks such as reading a book at the end of your day, to having regular meetings with a trained professional to discuss how you feeling in general about your day to day situation. It is all about finding out what works best for you and what works best for your mind to be calm, comfortable and happy. Cycling is an easy yet effective way of taking care of your mental health. A gentle exercise like such can have astounding benefits on your mental health, taking a little chunk of your day to work on yourself and focusing solely on yourself. You will notice a relieving source for stress – stress can be the main factor of contributing to health problems both externally and internally as well as mentally, causing anxiety and depression. Cycling reduces levels of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone.
Regular cycling is known to benefit your sleeping habits, as the movement of the exercise will leave your body feeling tired which of course is the main contributor to sleep, however, it encourages a release of Human Growth Hormone into your bloodstream while you are sleeping.
Higher self-esteem and energy levels can be benefited by cycling on the regular, as being on the move and increasing your heart rate gives you that little extra motivation you have been looking for to get through your day’s tasks, and when you work out it aids a strength and feel-good factor within, ultimately boosting your general mood and confidence.
Cycling Benefits On Your Day-to-Day Routine
Whether you choose to cycle to and from work, taking your children to school, or just to enjoy long bike rides at the weekend, were you aware on the benefits that cycling can have on your general day-to-day business? For example, it can be a more time-efficient form of transport for you. When you decide to take the car to work, you could run into the unavoidable rush hour traffic, therefore sitting at traffic lights and roundabouts for a substantial amount of time in the morning, wasting valuable time of your day. Cycling to work has been made even easier and safer these days with the brand new and more popular cycle lanes aiding you to beat the rush.
Cycling also helps to settle your financial situation being FREE. That’s right, no petrol costs, general MOT or service maintenance, just hop on your bike, pop on your helmet and off you go!

On your morning commute into work today, or doing the school run, out of interest how many people did you see travelling by bike? Chances are less likely than how many cars were on the road, or even people walking for that matter. Cycling is proven to have fantastic benefits on both our physical and mental health, including increased muscle strength and flexibility, improve posture and coordination, decrease body fat, reduce stress and anxiety – to name a few. But did you know that in England, under 3% of children between the ages of five to sixteen cycle to school, with more than a third of them commuting by car. This is a seriously disappointing statistic but when compared to the 40% of Dutch children who travel by bike – it’s all the more staggering! And to add that in Denmark’s second city, Odense – 81% of pupils cycle to school.
Something has to be done to initiate our children of the future to take more consideration of their health, and to learn about the benefits that cycling your journey to and from school can have on your general health. We have cycle lanes in place, the correct safety gear available in local stores and safety procedures are put in place on our public roads so there is no reason to not get more active and encourage your children to swap the car for your pedals. Here at Miko we have a range of bicycle storage solutions that are perfect for your child’s school, or even at home, to ensure that your equipment is safe and secure when not in use. Read on to find out what we can offer you…

With the weather getting warmer it is only natural that school children will begin to venture outside during their breaks, but why wait for the weather to get better? At Miko Engineering, we offer a range of school canopies to best suit your needs.
Outdoor Dining Canopies
When considering outdoor dining, in the UK we must also consider shelter solutions from the drastic weather changes. Outdoor dining creates sheltered seating solutions for pupils, meaning they have the option to socialise with friends while eating their lunch in an ‘alfresco’ manner.
Outdoor dining canopies also provide for a much cheaper solution to extending your dining hall, as well as having a positive effect on students productivity and their ability to learn.
Our outdoor dining canopies have multiple uses including using it for dining purposes, as well as a new teaching area, but if you’re wanting more space it would be better for your establishment to get an additional teaching canopy.

Teaching Canopies
Teaching canopies are starting to become the main hub for teaching within schools, especially since it has come to light that teaching outside of the classroom is so important for the development of students. Creative education stated that “taking kids beyond the classroom is like unclipping their wings”. Children outside of the classroom can come up with more creative results, as well as a higher desire to learn, as they feel more engaged.
When designing an outdoor teaching canopy we also make sure to involve the school as much as possible. At Miko Engineering, we provide an extremely bespoke process so that your canopy fits and functions perfectly. We can offer a range of designs, colours and door choices. We can also include details such as internal lighting and even electrical points.

Sun Canopies
Sun canopies are vital for students and employees during those hot summer months. The sun can cause extreme damage to children’s skin, so our sun canopies are designed to safeguard against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Sun canopies come in various designs, one of the most popular being a sail canopy, as it offers a contemporary, yet impressive shelter solution. A sail canopy is a type of sun canopy that is known for supplying optimum coverage and protection on rainy days and during sunny spells. Sail Canopies are usually installed in schools as a smaller shelter solution for use in playgrounds, this is because they require fewer poles to hold it in place.
All of our sun canopies can be designed to suit your school’s theme and colours, whether this is done using a wooden framework for a more natural appeal, or a galvanised steel for a solution that will be built to last.

Here at Miko Shelter Solutions, we love to assist educational developments via our engineering solutions. This January, we are delighted to announce our support for National Storytelling Week! This year the week will be running from 27th January to 3rd February and is set to be as wonderful as always. The agenda of the week is to encourage us to engage with the art of storytelling itself – an ancient practice we all have in common with our oldest ancestors. It is now in it’s 17th year and is a week bursting with fun, from workshops to events at theatres, museums and of course schools! But, where does Miko come in? Miko has worked closely with customers in the education sector for a number of years and through our work we want to encourage schools in the North East and beyond to utilise our shelter solutions during this year’s National Storytelling Week. Here’s how…
Get involved!
As noted, National Storytelling Week runs from 27th January to 3rd February and is a wonderful event to get involved in! Schools across the country will be joining in on the initiative and we encourage the North East to do so as well! Speech and language therapists believe that storytelling is vital for academic success as it promotes narrative skills and strengthens our ability to sequence ideas correctly. But above all, storytelling is fun. Whether we are listening to someone else’s story or telling our own, inventing and adapting narratives can open doors to exciting new worlds — both real and imaginary.
Take the event outside!
Depending on what story you’re covering, be sure that you’re using the best location for telling a story! Outdoor spaces make great locations as they are atmospheric, and children love to learn outside. Outside areas are also a great way to explore stories. For instance, children could re-enact the journey in “The Bear Hunt” around the playground.
That’s where Miko can help! Our playground shelters provide an idyllic learning space for children during National Storytelling week, allowing teachers to take the story outdoors with added protection from the unpredictable British weather in January!

Importance of having an entrance canopy on your commercial building
#1 Aesthetic Benefit
Entrance canopies can have immense importance purely for aesthetic reasons as they can help improve the overall look of your commercial building and draw visitors or customers into visiting your premises.
#2 Shelter
In a far more practical sense, entrance canopies are primarily used as shelter solutions to protect the customers and staff members of commercial buildings from bad weather. Our shelter range includes a number of products from canopies to protect customers from full sun exposure, however, with winter looming we also have products to protect from rain and high winds.
If you employee staff members who smoke entrance canopies can also provide a sheltered area for them to smoke outside of the workplace. However, if your commercial building requires a more permanent smoking shelter for your workplace Miko also design these shelters.
Importance of having an covered walkway on your commercial building
#1 Aesthetic Benefit
A covered walkway is a great way to make your building stand out from the crowd and give it a modern update with this practical design feature.
#2 Shelter
Covered walkways can be highly beneficial in commercial buildings to provide a sheltered space which connects buildings and office space together. This means employees and visitors can stay warm and dry when moving between buildings creating a more pleasant experience for them when they are on your premises. Additionally, it creates a connection between multiple commercial spaces, for instance if you wish to link two premises together.

BACK TO SCHOOL BIKE SHELTER SOLUTIONS…
#1 SCHOOL RUN RUSH
Miko bike shelters have been a popular solution for schools since the company was launched. Miko believes in the promotion of more sustainable travel options and therefore want to work to engineer school cycle shelters to assist the facilitation of cycle to schools schemes. Cars can often cause extreme congestion as well as create safety hazards around schools. The school run doesn’t always have to mean the pile-up of cars and here at Miko, we want to take away the pressure with our cycle solutions. Make the mornings less stressful for teachers, parents, and pupils by installing one of our bike and cycle shelters in your schoolyard for children to store their bikes. Why not- it’s more economically cost-effective and environmentally friendly!
#2 KEEP THE PARENTS HAPPY
Here at Miko, our engineers have worked hard to make our school bike shelter range adaptable and transformable into general shelter structures. This includes creating parent waiting shelters for school. Having a parent waiting shelter outside of a school entrance can provide parents for shelter and protection from the erratic British elements. Such shelter may encourage parents to walk their children to school or pick them up on foot if they have an area to wait safely for them. Miko simply adapts our classic bike shelters by removing the cycle rack and adding a comfortable bench for waiting purposes. In addition to providing a waiting area for parents, these shelters can also protect pupils and teachers from rain, strong winds, and harmful UV sun exposure. Waiting shelters can also act as the perfect designated pick up point for parents waiting to collect children from school. They are a great, practical addition to any school.
#4 OUTDOOR LEARNING
Miko has also developed an open teaching shelter option by adapting our primary cycle shelter structures. These bespoke shelters have a circular seating area that can be used as a shaded and sheltered outdoor classroom area for teachers and pupils to use during the warmer summer months. These shelters provide a fabulous opportunity to create an outdoor classroom and engage children through sensory outdoor learning.
#5 SCHOOL BUGGY SHELTERS
Here at Miko, we have also developed a range of buggy shelters in order to service the needs of clients from schools, hospitals, doctors surgeries and of course nurseries. These buggy shelters enable parents to walk young children to school with their older children and store the buggy if they so require.
Miko Engineering’s product range is designed with your school in mind. We understand that every school’s environment, budgets, and needs are different. By working closely with each school, Miko can account for these individual needs.
